61%

The FT Word Indicator returns! In its November/December 2012 edition of KM World, Jay Leibowitz reported that 61% of companies did not include learning and knowledge sharing proficiencies as part of annual performance review. Putting aside the poorly-worded question (avoid compound questions!) and the absence of a well-defined sample, this dismal statistic reminded me of a big obstacle to successful knowledge management and collaboration:  rewards and recognition!

Take a look at your support engineers’ goals and objectives? Is knowledge sharing mentioned at all? Is knowledge sharing one of the criteria for promotion? If not, go change them.
